During the lessons the teacher connects the new learning to prior lessons, provides a demonstration or other type of explicit instruction and involves the students in practicing the new skills. The teacher will confer with individual students or meet with small groups as he/she monitors progress and suggests next steps. Next, students will be asked to share their writing which is another opportunity for the focus of the lesson to be reinforced.
As students practice these new skills, they will be following the writing process which involves prewriting, drafting, revising, editing and for some pieces publishing. Students will have the opportunity to complete the writing process multiple times during the school year.
During this first year of implementation, teachers will work together across our school district to strengthen their own skills as writers and as teachers of writing. They will observe and analyze others in classrooms as they teach writing and collaborate together to plan instruction.
We look forward to this journey of equipping students to become proficient writers and invite you to talk with your child/children about what they are learning. Ask them to share their writing with you at home and look for opportunities for them to share their writing with others. We appreciate the partnership we have with you as we work together to support new learning!
